Spring Workshop Recap

4/25/2022

On April 16, 2022, library workers from the Portland metro and beyond gathered for the Children’s Services Division’s first in-person event in over two years: the Spring Workshop. Read on for a few highlights.

Lampman chair Holly Campbell-Polivka and co-presenters drew inspiration from Camper and Kenard Pak’s Ten Ways to Hear Snow to showcase the accomplishments of the award recipient. We heard the “swish-flip-flip” of librarianship, the “shhhhhh-ta-ta-ta-ta-t-t-t-t” of seed artistry, and more. In her acceptance speech, Camper reminded us that librarians have tremendous power through their institutions to fight against racism, sexism, and other forms of prejudice. Her call to action: “Keep doing what you’re doing. It connects even if you don’t know that.” (You can read more about Cathy Camper’s incredible legacy over on the 2022 Lampman Award page.)

Through self-reflection and hands-on learning, Megan Barella—a parenting coach—encouraged us to see play’s “promise to restore human relationships and connections.” Considering the pandemic’s effect on youth social-emotional development, play can help prevent and transform “flipped lids.” Libraries can help encourage play by loaning toys, creating calming corners, and even facilitating spontaneous dance parties. Barella suggested libraries share the load among staff by assigning someone to be in charge of fun each week.

How are you currently using play in the library?
What are the challenges to using play right now?
What are your goals and ideas for play?
Thanks to all who joined us—and braved the weather! Want to get involved in putting on events like these? Apply for one of CSD’s open positions.

On behalf of the CSD Board, I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who attended the CSD Spring Workshop Debrief Sessions. I also appreciate everyone who has taken the time to engage in the Watch & Reads or plan to in the future.

This is the first time we've done the Spring Workshop and fundraiser virtually. What did you think? Feel free to email [email protected] with feedback.
We wanted to make sure to send along some tips and takeaways from our debrief sessions:
April 30: Programming
-Watch & Reads
-Debrief notes

May 7th: EDI
-Watch & Reads
-Debrief notes

Want to find these resources at a later date?  Head over to our spring workshop page.

The Spring Workshop Fundraiser: Virtual Auction
Thank you to everyone who participated in the CSD fundraiser this spring. Whether you bid, bought, or donated, your support is greatly appreciated.  The fundraiser brought in over $700.

What's next for CSD?
If you were a member back in 2019, you might recall our first Summer Reading Summit in the fall! We are planning on having a similar learning opportunity called the Youth Services Summit. We are unsure if this will be in person or virtual, but will very likely have a virtual component. Stay tuned for more info, and thank you for your support of CSD!

Virtual Auction: A CSD Spring Fundraiser

4/4/2021

The Children's Services Division is pleased to announce our first ever virtual auction fundraiser. You can support the mission and purpose of the CSD by making a purchase at our virtual auction.  Browse the collection for an impressive selection of quality books. Your purchase helps us fund future scholarships and workshops.

The books for our auction were donated by a member of the Amelia Bloomer Award Committee. Books considered for the Amelia Bloomer List must include significant feminist content, be well-written and well-illustrated (if applicable), and be appealing for young readers from birth to age 18. While not all of these books won the award, they are all high-quality titles.

In the past, the CSD fundraiser was held during the spring workshop, an all-day, in-person event.  In 2020, the Spring Workshop and fundraiser, scheduled for mid-March, were cancelled due to the Coronavirus lockdown.  Today, we are hosting our first virtual auction fundraiser.

Auction winners in the Portland Metro Area may be able to arrange pick up instead of shipping the titles to you, especially if you purchase many lots.   Please contact our incoming co-chair for pick up arrangements.

If you have questions about our fundraiser, please contact our incoming co-chair, Susan Cackler.  If you are on a book committee and receive a large quantity of quality children's books, please consider donating them to CSD.  Please contact our incoming chair to make your donation.  Thank you for supporting the Children's Services Division!

Thanks to Greta and Bryce for taking notes during the meeting to help with this!   If you need to find the notes later, head to our Spring Workshop Series webpage or our Summer Reading webpage.
