The people have spoken!
Thank you, CSD members, for voting in Bryce Kozla (WCCLS) and Stephanie Goodwin (Jackson County Library) as incoming co-chairs, and Nicole Newsom (Multnomah County Library) as CSLP Rep. Nicole, Stephanie, and Bryce will begin their terms Sept. 1, 2019. Thanks also to Dena Chaffin (Silver Falls Library District) and Hilary Evart (Lake Oswego Public Library) for your willingness to run for CSLP Rep. The ballot is open for CSD's 2019-2020 Board of Directors! Cast your vote any time between now and Wednesday, June 19. Candidate Profile: Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) Rep Nicole Newsom, Multnomah County Library Experience I've been on MCL's Summer Reading Planning Committee for 5 + years. I use CSLP resources every year and purchase some CSLP's incentives and other materials each year. Candidate statement I am interested in this position because I hope to see CSLP become more equitable and inclusive in the materials and resources that are created and shared with libraries. From tattoos that may be too light in color to show up on darker toned skin, to lists of books that could be more representative of youth in our communities, I see that CSLP is doing some work towards equity and inclusion, but I think much more can be done. I have been learning and practicing tools for equity, inclusion and social justice in library work for 2+ years and I would like to contribute to this work with CSLP. If you could be any children's book character, what character would you be? Excellent Ed by Stacy McAnulty. Don’t forget to vote before Wednesday, June 19! The ballot is open for CSD's 2019-2020 Board of Directors! Cast your vote any time between now and Wednesday, June 19. Candidate Profile: Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) Rep Hilary Evart, Lake Oswego Public Library Experience I am a relatively new, and very happy, children’s librarian currently working in a permanent part-time position. I am also the administrator of a philanthropic foundation in Portland where I organize, manage, and assist both non-profit applicants and the foundation Trustees in the funding of charitable work. My previous career was with Guide Dogs for the Blind, where I trained scores of dogs and taught hundreds of people with vision impairments in partnering together as travel and life companions. My final role there was as Manager of Client Education. Some traits I claim are enthusiasm, reliability, and honesty. I’m a mom of two grown kids, a lifetime library user, and ready to draw upon my varied experiences and skills if chosen as your CSLP representative. Candidate statement I’d like to help optimize the CSLP resources that are intended to make summer reading programs both easier and richer for librarians. My main goal would be to represent accurately the full range of Oregon libraries in articulating requests, giving feedback, asking questions and conveying answers to and from the national organization- basically acting as a conduit with a voice. The hope is that my tendency to engage and be curious would be useful, and also that my colleagues would ultimately trust me to speak for them. If you could be any children's book character, what character would you be? Sal from One Morning in Maine by Robert McCloskey. Don’t forget to vote before Wednesday, June 19! The ballot is open for CSD's 2019-2020 Board of Directors! Cast your vote any time between now and Wednesday, June 19. Candidate Profile: Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) Rep Dena Chaffin, Silver Falls Library District Experience More than 20 years working in libraries for Portland Public Schools, and almost three years working at Silver Falls Library District in Silverton, Ore. Candidate statement I am passionate about making connections between our libraries and the youth/teens that we all serve. Our work and excitement are what makes them our future adult users, and lifelong learners. I want to bridge the gap between schools and public libraries and CSLP is a great way to involve both, by opening doors for future relationships as a team. If you could be any children's book character, what character would you be? Emily Pig in Yummers by James Marshall. Don’t forget to vote before Wednesday, June 19! The ballot is open for CSD's 2019-2020 Board of Directors! Cast your vote any time between now and Wednesday, June 19. Candidate Profile: Incoming Chair Bryce Kozla, Washington County Cooperative Library Services Experience I have substantial experience as a project manager which I believe would serve me well as co-Chair of CSD. As a leader, I prioritize relationships and want to be sure a variety of perspectives are included. I especially am interested in making considerations through equity and trauma-informed care lenses. This sometimes can make change less immediate, but psychological safety of a group moving through innovation is really important to me. I began working in libraries as a front-line school services librarian at La Crosse Public Library in Wisconsin. I’ve worked as a Youth Services Librarian at WCCLS since 2015. I am a passionate advocate for Youth Services staff and the families of our community, and consider this advocacy a huge part of my job. In 2017, WCCLS adopted a Youth Access Card in an effort to remove barriers to access for children attending school in Washington County. In order to support Youth Services staff in getting the new patron type implemented, I attended meetings, gave presentations, and had team and one-on-one chats with multiple stakeholders. While the journey was a bit messy, I learned a lot and am excited to keep working toward a model that will ensure that more children are able to get library cards. The first year saw nearly 2,000 new registrations made possible by the Youth Access Card! I’ve served on several committees dedicated to library work:
Additionally, I just finished my time as co-Chair of our local Northwest Regional Educational Services District’s Early Intervention Advisory Council. Candidate statement Having worked in Oregon for nearly four years, I’m feeling like I am getting a handle on what makes our state so unique and the structure of OLA. I’ve gotten so much from CSD already; I value the welcoming nature of our state’s Youth Services staff that helped me feel at home pretty quickly. I’m prepared and eager to give back and to continue and enhance the culture of sharing and community that I’ve seen so far in my involvement with CSD. I’m also excited for the opportunity to strengthen and support involvement by library staff all over the state. I believe that we’re stronger together and look forward to examining ways to make that togetherness a more inclusive reality. If you could be any children's book character, what character would you be? This is a tough one! Right now I’m feeling like it’d be cool to be Murky from the series The Strange Case of Origami Yoda, if only to able to really pull off adding words like “stooky” and “nostrul” to daily conversation. Growing up I always wanted to be the eccentric aunts/uncles that are all over the place in middle grade novels; and I’m pretty sure I’m just a few hoop skirts and a loud bowling shirt away from reaching that goal. Bryce is running as co-chair with Stephanie Goodwin from Jackson County Library. Vote for this dynamic duo before Wednesday, June 19! The ballot is open for CSD's 2019-2020 Board of Directors! Cast your vote any time between now and Wednesday, June 19. Candidate Profile: Incoming Co-Chair Stephanie Goodwin, Jackson County Library Experience I have spent the last 15 years working in youth services from my early beginnings as a volunteer all the way up to supervising my own department. During this time I have taught early literacy workshops to community organizations, performed numerous story times, planned countless Summer Reading Programs, and took early literacy on the road through a preschool bookmobile. Candidate statement I am interested in this position as I see it as a way to give back to my youth services community. It has only been through support and guidance of my fellow youth workers that I have had the experiences and gained the knowledge that I have and now I feel it is my time to turn around and share this with others. During my time as chair I hope to continually raise awareness on the importance of the youth years as the foundation for the rest of their lives as well as encourage, support, and be a resource to the many wonderful youth workers in Oregon libraries who might feel they need a little extra support. If you could be any children's book character, what character would you be? Turtle Wexler from The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. She's clever and enjoys a mystery and getting to the bottom of it. Stephanie is running as co-chair with Bryce Kozla from Washington County Cooperative Library Services. Vote for this dynamic duo before Wednesday, June 19! |
