Join us for our CSD Spring Workshop: Inclusive Early Literacy We are excited to announce that Melissa Pebly, EdD Assistant Professor of Practice, Portland State University, College of Education will be our workshop facilitator. Her workshop is on Friday, March 22nd from 1:00-3:00PM on Zoom. The workshop will help attendees become familiar with: how storytime can impact educational outcomes for children with disabilities and diverse learning needs, the principles of Universal Design for Learning, initial strategies to support children with disabilities in storytime, and more. Many thanks to the Youth Librarians (at heart or in practice) who got together Wednesday to do a thing that brings us joy---talk about great books for kids! Enjoy this list of favorites. Some of the suggestions are great for storytime, some for one-on-one with a youngster, and others are for when you want to curl up in a comfy chair with a warm beverage and just enjoy a great book written for children.

There's no charge - just mark that you're interested when you register for the conference! Meet some of the great talent featured on the Oregon Library Presenters Directory and the Oregon Culture Keepers Roster. This isn't a performance time, but rather a chance to connect with possible people to book at your library. The fair features programs for different audience ages and types of programs, from crafts to magic, music to lectures.  AuthorSusan Cackler Who doesn't love fries? Children will love making this funny Valentine's craft. Ask children to cut out the heart template, fries, and tag. This craft is great for fine motor skill development and teaches them about folding paper on dotted lines. Ask them to count how many fries they created. Help them to read the tag along with you. They can give this special Valentine to someone they care about. Feel free to stretch this craft a bit more by helping them write the name of the person whom they will give it on the pink paper.
 AuthorEmily West Virtual Winter Workshop: Book Buzz The Children's Services Division is presenting our virtual winter workshop, Book Buzz, on February 21, 2024 from 12:00-1:00PM. Gather together with your fellow youth library workers to chat about new and noteworthy titles from 2023. Before the event, we request that participants share kids books of all genres that they think are great and should be shared. Send submissions in advance to Jamie Thoreson at [email protected]. Submit up to 5 books you think are great and start with your strongest feelings, focusing on books from 2023 and maybe a few from 2022. We encourage you to make your selections using a diversity lens. A complete list of books that were shared will be available after the event. This craft is a great way to introduce children to describing measurable attributes of objects such as length, using a ruler to measure their hands and feet, and comparing them to others' hands and feet. Also, be sure to read some non-fiction and fiction penguin books together!
